A Sinking Feeling

I had a phone call this morning from a friend to say he'd received a call from the berth master telling him that his boat was sitting very low in the water. I nipped over and found a similar sight to one I have seen before, there was no sign of the antifoul or boot top as it was several inches under water and on entering the boat the sight wasn't good. I jumped straight in and was up to my knees searching for the seacocks while phoning the berth master to get the hoist ready and to bring down their large pumps.

It took us about an hour to pump all the water out with the crash pump from the yard and another 30 minutes to get the boat out of the water. After lots of searching the culprit was the galley raw water plumbing, it hadn't been touched or checked since the boat had been purchased and was made up of many short lengths of flexible and rigid pipe all connected together, one of the joints had come apart under the cabin sole and had been filling the boat overnight.

The batteries were completely submerged and the terminal connectors had corroded completely away, the water was also over the top of the engine and had filled it completely.
